Electrix was contracted to carry out mechanical and electrical installation works for the 220kV Switchyard with three 220/33kV transformers and a 33kV Schneider switchboard.


The scope of the project involved the following:

  • Installation of 5 Bays of outdoor 220KV AIS
  • Installation of 33 KV switch Board
  • Installation of 33KV cables from Transformer to the switch Board
  • Installation of 40 over protection, signaling and communication panels.
  • Installation of Switch Yard metal
  • Transmission line diversions at Pakuranga and Otahuhu sites.
  • Testing and commissioning of 3 Transformers
  • Testing and Commissioning of 220 KV switch yard

The total of staff working on this contract varied from 40 at the peak to 12 including 3 technicians accumulating in 37227 hours worked. Among the challenges was the scope of work increasing by 60% and the need to free up more staff. Managing multiple contractors and a delay in civil works caused rescheduling, however, with careful planning these challenges were met and the contract completed to a high standard.


The contract was completed on time and to budget. Transpower have another reliable substation supplying Auckland from the National Grid.
