Key Facts

Project: UAV Pole Inspection

Client: Powercor Australia

Location: Wind Farms at Challicum Hills and Portland, Victoria

Duration: November - December 2016

In November 2016, Electrix was engaged by Powercor to undertake the inspection of sub-transmission lines which provide grid connection for these wind farms operated by Pacific Hydro near Portland in Western Victoria. This included 398 off 66kV poles associated with the Portland wind farm and an additional 80 poles for the Challicum Hills wind farm.

The pole inspections are conducted utilising our newly refurbished Toyota Landcruiser which is fully equipped with an elevating mast “ElMast” and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle “UAV” capabilities for aerial inspection. Our fully qualified asset inspectors are experienced with safe operation of these inspection.

Utilising our ElMast and UAV capability for pole top inspection is a cost effective way to undertake accurate condition assessment and defect identification on high voltage lines where increased pole height makes ground based inspection less effective. This is particularly applicable in areas where access is difficult.
